MILFORD — Call it a changing of the cone or a swap of the sundaes.

On Aug. 13, ice-cream maker Vanderwende’s opened its newest location at 10 S. Walnut St., the former home of the North Pole Creamery, whose owner David Pickrell, has retired.

Seaford-based land management company Aleman Fitzgerald Properties LLC closed on the property July 31. Vanderwende’s also rents a spot from the firm for its location in Georgetown, so Aleman Fitzgerald suggested the Milford establishment, as well.

The new site “has its own character already,” Taylor Vanderwende, a member of the family that owns the Bridgeville-based Vanderwende Farm Creamery, said Friday, Aug. 21. “We’re going to bring some of our own branding into it, kind of transitioning from one ice-cream shop into a special little thing.”

Initially, the store will offer around 25 flavors.

“We’ll probably try to just get by with the bare minimum for this season, and then, over winter, we might add some other things,” she continued. “The shop will be open through December, then probably close in January and February, but that’s all depending on what sales are like.”

Founded by William and Ellen Vanderwende in 1954, Vanderwende Farm Creamery now owns nearly 4,000 acres and milks its over 225 registered Holstein cows twice a day.

It also operates stores in Bridgeville, Greenwood, Dewey Beach and Fenwick Island, plus plans to open one soon in the Nylon Capital Center in Seaford.

“My son wants us to have 10 stores,” Vanderwende said.
