MILFORD — The city will receive $2.7 million in state funding for road improvements necessary for the construction of the Milford Corporate Center, a spokeswoman for the city confirmed.
“This was a big win for the city,” Sara Bluhm said, adding that the influx will mean fewer taxpayer dollars will be needed to pay for the project.
The latest funding will bring the total grant dollars being used for the initiative to $3.8 million.
Milford officials aim to make the corporate center a big economic driver, by attracting businesses and creating jobs. Its estimated cost is roughly $23 million, including the $6.38 million the city paid for the property — the land of the former Fry Farms — last December.
The $2.7 million grant comes from the Delaware Department of Transportation’s Transportation Infrastructure Investment Fund, which aims to boost business in the state by upgrading roads and similar infrastructure. The city learned it would receive the money Nov. 16, Ms. Bluhm said.
The allocation will pay for the design and construction of the roadwork necessary to get into the center. The plan is to build a roundabout at the eastern entrance, near the intersection of Canterbury and Airport roads, Ms. Bluhm said. Drivers will also be able to turn into the business park from Milford Harrington Highway.
The complex will be built in stages, with the parcel divided into lots of varying sizes. Adjacent lots could be combined to suit the varying needs of businesses.
Construction on the facility is slated to begin late next year.
